The details...
Sailor's temperature had begun to drop around 4:00 p.m. on Friday August 14th, indicating that her labour had begun. We thought for sure we were in for another middle of the night delivery so we all went to bed early.
Sailor was restless throughout the night but managed to get some sleep. As the work never ends around here, we all began to see if we could get some things done before the arrival.
Of course I just had to attempt to finish staining our massive wrap around deck or atleast make some more progress and cut a couple of acres of grass. While Mike did some landscaping and then ran errands bringing us home lunch.
Mom & Dad arrived around 1:00 to be here for the big event and after touring them around to see the latest projects we have completed we sat down to lunch.
As we were just finishing up, around 2:30, Sailor began to whine and rush about the house causing the other dogs to be concerned and bark. Amanda and I immediately took her into the puppy room to get her ready while Mom and Mike cleaned up.
It looked as though she would deliver any moment so we called to them and asked that they drop everything and come help right away.
2:50 - excessive shaking, more whimpering and visible contractions have begun.
3:00 - relaxed, contractions still far apart
3:20 - mucus plug visible and contractions speeding up
3:30 - water broken and mucus plug out...tail wagging as she begins to nest
Now we wait ... a long period of time went by where she would push with a contraction and stop, push and stop. I began to get a bit concerned with the length of time this was taking as I could see the bulge of the puppy awaiting birth for over 10 minutes. I was extremely relieved when the first puppy began to emerge. So happy in fact there were tears of joy running down my face...what a relief.
3:56 - the first puppy was born weighing in at a bruising 14.7 oz.. No wonder it took so long ... ouch!
First ....
...puppy to be born weighing in over 11 oz. not to mention that all but one beat the record
...male white puppy followed by a second male white puppy
This is the smallest litter to date with only 6 puppies but as you can see by their weight.
Still 50% black, 50% white and only 2 males in the litter.
Special thanks to everyone present for all of their help.
Mike - for always doing anything and everything I ask of him
Amanda - for being there every step of the way and your amazing notes of all the activities, these details are important
Mom - for your never ending cheerleading and willingness to help
Irene - for taking such good care of Sailor throughout her labour and for the amazing meal you made for our entire team
Don - for your support and patience, as well as the amazing barbequed chicken wings.
While Holly couldn't be here in person this time having recently delivered her own baby (Thalia 10 weeks old), we did manage to have her on speaker phone for 2 of the births.
As for Dad, it's hard for him to breath in a room that Mike likes to keep at 90 degrees, but he peeked in from time to time to see how things were going.
Sadly Jess and Dan were working, but will have lots of time to spend with the puppies.
Of course Glenda and Echo, we couldn't do this without you.
Megan Wasley - for your puppy theme inspiration and helping me to understand what Twilight was all about. Love the names...
Lastly, congratulations to the new families who are fortunate enough to be adding one of these amazing puppies to your life.
Your new puppy will bring years of memories, joy and happiness to your family.
Words alone cannot explain just how much pleasure we get from beinging able to play a part in this.
Thanks ....
Cheryl & Mike
